ing authentic baskets following the traditional Taita culture. It is a very labour intensive art using self-twined and self-dyed sisal string. The sisal grows in fields belonging to the women. Over the years, selling the baskets has become an important income- generating activity that empowers around
650 women in the communities.
The sustainable products made by different women groups in the area are sold under the umbrella name Hadithi, meaning ‘a story’ in Swahili. Every basket is designed by the wom- an’s own personal choice, reflecting her story and daily mood. A photo tag of the woman who made your basket allows you to meet her. Skill- fully created with a traditional and unique char- acter, this Hadithi collection combines practical convenience with bright, decorative colours.
